TOGO: Sea turtle shell trafficker arrested in Lomé

photo220703247217831277 Mr. AMEGASHI Anani, a big trafficker of sea turtle shells was arrested in Ablogamé (a suburb of Lomé) in possession of three sea turtle shells.
Indeed, in the night of January 26, 2016, the special agents of the Ministry of Security (OCRTIDB) in collaboration of ANCE/TALFF have arrested Mr. AMEGASHI Anani, a Togolese in possession of three (3) sea turtle shells. As the offender is an illegal fisherman, he used to propose the products of his activity to customers.
A serious investigation carried out had proven that the offender AMEGASHI Anani is a fisherman in Lomé for many years and the practice of his activity goes against Togo national laws and the international norms with regard to the protection of emblematic endangered species.
According to Togo national law, the exploitation, the detention, and the marketing of sea turtle shells, a totally protected species in Togo are banned and punished in accordance with to the articles 87 and 127 of the forest code, the articles 61, 62, and 154 of the environmental framework law. Therefore, and by the law enforcement, the offender can be jailed for 2 years and he could pay a fine amounting 5 millions without damages.
